Understanding Customs Limits and Taxes in International Logistics

Navigating customs regulations and taxes is crucial in international logistics to ensure smooth shipments and avoid unexpected costs. Here's everything you need to know about customs limits and taxes to streamline your global shipping process:

1. Customs Limits Explained:

  • Customs limits refer to the maximum value or quantity of goods that can be imported/exported into a country without incurring additional taxes or duties.
  • Each country sets its own customs limits, which vary based on factors such as the type of goods, their value, and the purpose of import/export.
  • Understanding customs limits is essential for businesses and individuals to comply with regulations and avoid delays or penalties at customs checkpoints.

2. Taxes in International Logistics:

  • Taxes in international logistics include import duties, value-added tax (VAT), excise taxes, and other levies imposed by customs authorities.
  • Import duties are tariffs imposed on imported goods by the destination country's government. They are calculated based on factors such as the product's value, classification, and country of origin.
  • Value-added tax (VAT) is a consumption tax levied on the value added at each stage of production or distribution. It is applied to the final price of goods and services imported into a country.
  • Excise taxes are specific duties imposed on certain goods such as alcohol, tobacco, and fuel.

3. Importance of Compliance:

  • Compliance with customs limits and tax regulations is essential for businesses to avoid fines, seizures, or delays in shipments.
  • Proper documentation, accurate declaration of goods, and adherence to import/export regulations are key to ensuring compliance and minimizing risks in international logistics.

Sending to the EU from UK or otherwise - what has changed?

From 1 of July 2021, goods sent from the UK to the EU and back, regardless of the value, will now be subject to EU/UK VAT.
An exception to this is if you are not a business and you are sending a gift up to a value of £39/€45.

All our parcels shipped as DDU (Delivery Duties Unpaid) basis is where your recipient in the EU or any other country pays all customs, duties and fees after their goods have arrived in the destination country. Local customs contact the recipient, who must pay any outstanding charges before their goods are released for final delivery to the home address. Parcels will be held by customs until payments are made. Any payments not received may result in parcels being returned, delayed, or in some cases destroyed.

If your parcel is returned to us for any reason, including incorrect address, refusal to accept delivery, or failure to pay customs charges, please contact us. Please note that all return costs and any applicable customs charges will be the responsibility of the customer. This includes shipping fees for the return journey and any customs duties or taxes incurred during the initial shipment.

We recommend ensuring that the shipping address provided is accurate and complete, and that any customs duties or taxes required for international shipments are paid in a timely manner to avoid any issues with delivery. If you have any questions or concerns regarding customs charges or returns, please don't hesitate to contact our customer support team for assistance.
