A light purchase does not always make a cheap parcel. A bulky coat, a lampshade or a small item surrounded by protective packaging can take up considerable transport space. That is why the dimensions of the finished box can matter as much as the scale reading.
Keep three figures distinct: actual packed weight, volumetric weight and the weight the selected service uses for charging. The product weight on a store page does not supply all three.
What is being measured?
Actual packed weight includes the goods, outer box, filling and any other packaging. Volumetric weight converts the parcel’s external dimensions into a weight figure under the carrier’s formula. The divisor, rounding and service limits must be checked for the service you choose.
A worked example with a named formula
DHL Express explains a formula using centimetres: length × width × height ÷ 5,000. For a 40 × 30 × 20 cm parcel, this gives 4.8 kg. If its actual packed weight is 2 kg, the volumetric figure is greater before any service-specific rounding.
This illustrates DHL Express’s published method, not a universal Shopogolic divisor or a delivery quote. Do not apply 5,000 automatically to a different postal or courier service. Confirm its charging rules and use the same units throughout.
Can repacking help?
A smaller outer box may remove empty space, but protection still needs to suit the goods. Ask whether the original retail box is needed for a return, resale or the item’s condition. Removing it solely to reduce dimensions can be the wrong trade-off.
Before approving repacking, compare its service cost with the available shipping options. A smaller parcel does not guarantee a particular saving or a lower tariff band.
Check every parcel in the comparison
If goods will travel in several boxes, obtain each box’s final dimensions and weight. Do not assume the price of one box with the combined weight equals the price of several separate pieces. Check maximum dimensions and any surcharges for the chosen service.
Which figures should you put in the calculator?
Use the outer dimensions of the prepared parcel, including protruding parts, and its packed weight in the parcel delivery calculator. Before arrival, mark these as estimates; confirm them after packing.
For an oversized or fragile item, contact our support with the product link and destination before purchase. Check packing and service charges alongside transport. The useful comparison is the complete cost of suitable packaging and an available delivery, not the smallest imaginable box.
