The same trainers or appliance can have different prices in a UK shop and a German shop. The useful comparison is what it costs to receive the exact product at your EU address, including the services and import treatment of each route.
Check availability before price. A route that cannot accept your item is not a cheaper alternative. A different model, voltage, plug, size or warranty arrangement is not an identical purchase either.
Find out where the goods actually are
A German-language website does not prove that goods will be dispatched from Germany or already have EU customs status. Ask where the product ships from and whether it has been released for free circulation. The Commission explains checks for online imports.
Goods in free circulation generally move within the EU without another external import duty. That is different from goods held under a customs procedure or shipped from outside the EU. See the Commission’s explanation of the EU customs union. Check special territories and goods-specific rules separately.
Build the UK route in pounds
Start with the exact product price, delivery to the UK warehouse, currency conversion and any agreed purchase assistance. Then add warehouse services, packaging, onward transport and applicable import costs for the EU destination.
Do not automatically remove UK VAT from a retail price because you intend to forward the purchase later. Confirm the seller’s actual invoice and export treatment. Likewise, do not assume EU import charges were collected simply because a store charged tax.
Build the German route on the same basis
Check delivery to the German warehouse, service charges and forwarding to the same recipient postcode. Use the same product quantity and a comparable packaging assumption. Compare the UK warehouse option with the German warehouse option using current conditions.
If the store actually dispatches from outside the EU, include the relevant import stage rather than treating it as an ordinary intra-EU delivery. A warehouse address and a store domain cannot establish that status by themselves.
Keep origin separate from dispatch
Product origin rules concern where the goods originate, which may differ from where they are bought. Forwarding a product through Britain does not automatically make it British. Any tariff preference needs its conditions and evidence checked before it enters your budget.
Compare the outcome, including a possible return
Convert both complete estimates into one currency using the actual payment conversion terms. Include a realistic return route if size or suitability is uncertain. Check who approves a return and whether the retail packaging must stay intact.
Use the parcel delivery calculator with the same final destination and suitable packed dimensions. If an import assumption is unclear, ask our support before purchase. Choose the route that works for the goods and full cost; neither country is always cheaper.
